Appointments at Walter Investment Management and Akerman LLP highlight this week’s Tampa Bay business Movers & Shakers


Walter Investment Management Corp. has named John J. Haas as general counsel, chief legal officer and secretary of the company. Haas joined Walter in June of 2014 as assistant general counsel and most recently served as acting general counsel and chief legal officer.

Haas has more than 15 years of experience practicing corporate and securities law and working in finance. Before joining Walter, he was most recently Of Counsel for Foley & Lardner LLP in their Private Equity and Venture Capital Group. He also served as executive director, Global Capital Solutions for UBS AG and began his career as a corporate attorney at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Haas holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida and a Juris Doctorate from New York University School of Law.


Akerman LLP announced Irene Bassel Frick has been appointed office managing partner of the Tampa office.

Frick is a partner in Akerman’s Litigation Practice Group and is a member of the firm’s Client Experience Team. She previously served as a member of the firm’s Associate Professional Evaluation Committee. In the community, Frick is a founder and member of the Bay Area Legal Services Pearl Society and previously served as the president of the Hillsborough Association for Women Lawyers.

Tampa attorney Hala Sandridge will take office July 1 as the first vice president of The Florida Bar Foundation, a statewide charitable organization whose mission is to provide greater access to justice. Sandridge, co-managing shareholder of the Tampa office of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, practices in the area of appellate law. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and her law degree from the Florida State University College of Law.

Tampa attorney Karen Buesing has been appointed to a three-year term on the board of The Florida Bar Foundation. A partner with Akerman LLP, Buesing has counseled and represented management in employment law matters for more than 30 years.

Tampa attorney Murray Silverstein has been reappointed to a three-year term on the board of The Florida Bar Foundation. Silverstein is an attorney at Greenspoon Marder, P.A., where he focuses his practice on commercial litigation and class actions.


Tech Data Corp. nominated Karen Dahut for appointment to the company’s board of directors. She will be included in Tech Data’s proxy statement for election by the company’s shareholders to serve as an independent director.

Dahut serves as an executive vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton, where she leads the firm’s Civil Commercial Group (CCG) and is a member of the executive management committee. As the lead for the CCG, Dahut directs the strategy and delivery of the firm’s strategic, technology, cyber, and analytics solutions to both commercial clients and leading federal civilian agencies. From 2012 to 2016, she served as Booz Allen Hamilton’s chief innovation officer.

Locale Market in St. Petersburg’s Sundial announced the addition of Mordechai Baron as general manager.

Baron comes to Locale from his former position as general manager of Dean & Deluca in Charlotte, NC.

Baron’s additional international and U.S. based experience includes time as one of the opening team members for the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He has also served as the general manager for the Los Angeles Convention Center, where he managed, directed and oversaw food service operations for the Emmys, Grammy’s, the L.A. Auto Show and for Oprah Winfrey.
