Texas remains one of the most popular states in the country for movers.
That’s according to a new report from storage and moving company U-Haul, which used data from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul customer transactions in the U.S. and Canada to reveal which states people are moving to most often. Texas was number one in 2023.
It’s the third straight year and the sixth year since 2016 that Texas has topped the list, according to U-Haul’s Growth Index. Though the number of one-way U-Haul customers arriving in Texas fell nearly 11% from 2022, departures decreased more than 11% as overall moving traffic slowed.

“Do-it-yourself movers arriving in Texas still accounted for 50.4% of all one-way U-Haul traffic in and out of Texas (49.6% departures) to keep it the leading growth state,” according to the report.
It’s hardly the first time Texas and its cities have been highlighted for their abilities to attract new residents. Austin City Demographer Lila Valencia recently presented a report to the City Council that listed the Austin metropolitan area as the fastest-growing area in the U.S. for the 12th consecutive year in 2022. In July, Hispanics became the largest racial demographic group in the state following years of consistent population growth within the racial bloc, according to U.S. Census figures.
